Heritage Fabrics - Ready for Autumn?

It’s great to embrace our heritage and wear it on our sleeve, but let’s be honest, tweeds and checks are not the easiest patterns to pull off.

Do remember that fabrics such as tartan, tweed, dogtooth etc., are fundamentally a weave of straight lines, and straight lines do not flatter all body shapes. These fabrics are best suited to straighter figures, so if you have a curvier shape, look for a more subtle versoin of the pattern. You will also want to choose a garment in a fluid fabric such as soft jersey. As with any bold pattern, tartans and checks draw attention, so you need to think carefully about how you wear it and where you wear it on your body. If your hips are your problem area, you won’t want to wear a big tweed skirt, for example. If you have a fuller bust then checks or tweeds on top will appear to add more volume.

The traditional earthy browns, greens and camels are perfect for Warm colourings and softer versions of these shades will work for Soft colourings. For Deep colourings, you can wear the rich pines and chocolate browns but you may need to add some purple or burgundy to give your Autumn look more depth. Clear colourings should find more colourful pieces in bolder shades like blue (another big shade this season) and mix with tops in white, cream or another strong colour to add contrast. Lights can choose some of the pale camels and very light greens. Cools should avoid the warm, earthy tones and instead look for black and white pieces or find items in cool red, navy or purple.

If in doubt, you can pay homage to your heritage in a tartan or tweed handbag.
